The NSW atoms (11 and under) attended the John McCrae-Williamson National Championship held in Melbourne, Victoria from September 15-19, 2009. Ellesse Carini was chosen to represent the NSW Atoms State team with Mathew Wu and Bayley Kubara chosen as reserves. Ellesse was also chosen as one of the assistant Captains.
NSW won Qld (13-3), SA (9-0), and WA (7-2). However, when they came up against Victoria in the round robin, they were defeated 7 to 4. Bouncing back though they had a convincing win against ACT (10-0) placing them in 2nd place going into the semi finals. They had a convincing win with WA (12-1) which meant that they faced Vic in the finals.
Battle stations were called and they came out all fired up leading 2-0 however the end of the first period saw them tied 2 all. Second period through a lot of positioning and passing, saw NSW in the lead 4-2. Third period showed a quick goal by NSW however VIC got a burst of energy with 2 goals being scored bringing the score line to 5-4 with NSW getting a penalty. Vic took the opportunity to pull the goalie to take advantage of a power play however, the 4 NSW players kept their positions and repeatedly iced the puc putting a halt to Vic’s plan of attack with the end result 5-4 NSW!!!!!
A nail biting finish the game was described and we can see the evidence as I swear Patrick has more pepper streaks than before………..
Personal stats for Ellesse was 7 goals 2 assists and being one of the top 10 scorers at the championships.
The LCC Saints Atom players, their management and coach, and the rest of the LCC Saints hockey club is proud of your achievements Ellesse and we look forward to you bringing your experiences back to the team.
