The LCC Saints Ice Hockey Club participated in The Sydney Winter Festival held on Thursday 18/6 to Sunday 21/6 at the steps of St Mary’s Cathedral and it proved to be a great success for Ice Hockey as a whole.
Our little Atoms players were quite surprised when we first arrived on the Friday afternoon to be in a great winter setting in the middle of Sydney. To see an open air Ice Rink and snow falling was fantastic.
IHNSW invited the Atoms players from various clubs to display our sport to the public for the first time at an outdoor Ice Rink. All teams were allotted a certain amount of time to demonstrate their skills. On Thursday, the LCC Saints arrived at 4 pm for a demonstration at 4.55 pm for a period of three minutes flat. We had a junior goalkeeper and two players and a referee to officiate. The three minutes of scrimmage absolutely thrilled the crowd and was such a success the promoters asked us to keep going. It ended after five minutes with the crowd cheering our boys on.
One hour later after many photo requests from the public and with the boys on a high we were back on the ice and this time with another three players from the Norwest Emperors. Again the players from both clubs dazzled the crowd. This period went for ten minutes longer than the first. As proud LCC Saints members, it was an experience to see the reactions of the crowd. One hour later we were back for our final show.
The Sydney Winter Festival provides great exposure of Ice Hockey and the organiser has commented it will be bigger and better in 2010. We are all looking forward to another great opportunity to promote the sport and LCC Saints.
