Lots of changes, some would say, others not much has changed. The Committee has changes, but hopefully past members still stay involved to a certain extent & offer their wisdom from previous years examples, or mistakes that we don’t want to make again.
The start of the season is here at last, with all players, itching to get on the ice, for their piece of the action.
I tried to see as many games as I could this weekend ( 6 ) & where possible, will try & be a regular at most of them.
Started with the Atoms, a great way to begin the season, although not a win, a draw is better than some could manage, with lots of positives coming from it. Great work against The Bears with a 3/ all draw. Andy, you and your bench, must be so proud, as I am sure all the parents were, well done.
Next the Womens, at home, wasn’t sure what I was to expect here, but they certainly impressed me, with not only a win, but winning convincingly 4 nil, ( it may have even been 5, but hey, I am old, and, a guy ) and they didn’t play like girls, they are Hockey Players, that a lot of the guys, could learn a thing or two from. Well done ladies, great to see a few familiar faces, showing us, how it is done and done well. Some very skilled hockey players.
Full Contact hits the ice, with Bantams at home next, against Canterbury. Although a worrying start ,down 1 nil at the end of the first period, that was obviously a ploy, to lead them into a false sense of security, as the start of the second period, saw them come out, all guns blazing, with the third period racing away to finish the game 10 / 1. James, Brownie, what can I say ? Great score in game one. Obviously early days , but the season ahead looks promising.
Off to Canterbury for The Peewees, only to see them start off well, but fall behind to finish second, but heads up Peewees, it’s the first game & you were missing four key players, against a side that had their full compliment. Knowing what you have in reserve, I am sure they are beatable, get even next time.
Another first for me, to sit and actually watch some senior hockey, and greatly surprised, to see what my kids call “ old man hockey”, rattle the grandstands, with some pace in these two games that was unsurpassed by others with action from start to finish.
The Arch Angels were first to do battle at home, with the crowd ( well there was a few ) in full swing, but, unfortunately , they followed in the Peewee footsteps, but never gave up till the end. Early days yet, but I am sure , the coach has a surprise in store for you, this week at training.
The last, but by no means least, game for the weekend, saw out Titans up against the greenies from Norwest. A fast & furious pace, was set with shots here there and everywhere, before we finally got it right and landed our first one in the net. A couple more were scored, but disallowed, until we cracked it again, as various players tried to crack a few other things. Norwest getting about 50 PIM for their efforts with us only about half of that, and who , do I hear you say? Joe, not any. A GREAT game, which had all the skill and excitement of an A.I.H.L. game.
On a not so bright note, I heard in the distance, at two games, some negative barracking from our supporters. Please, if you cant contribute positively, showing full approval and support, stay home and don’t embarrass yourselves. Remember the Code of Conduct you signed .Enough about that.
Not too bad though, out of 6 games at different rinks that I was lucky enough to see, one draw, 3 wins & two second places, that makes for a happy and proud President, to start 2009, as I know there is room for improvement, but more importantly, the standard of ALL OUR games and players, was great, and it makes me proud to call myself a SAINT.
Thankyou and Congratulations to all,
Regards
